How to customize your Tumblr domain, Beginners’ Guide
Would you like to customize your Tumblr domain? I mean, would you like to change the username.tumblr.com address to something like yourdomain.com, www.yourdomain.com, or subdomain.yourdomain.com? Then this blog will help you out. Take note that if you want to customize your domain, make sure that you have registered your preferred domain. If you do not have one, you can register at Go Daddy, one of the best and the most trusted domain registrar out there.
Once your Tumblr blog and Domain are ready, you can proceed with the steps below.
I. Using your bold domain (First Level)
Follow this step if you would like to point your domain to Tumblr or use Tumblr as your primary host.
Open your DNS Manager.
Create or add new A Record (host). Enter @ for host field, 66.6.44.4 for Points to field, and 1 Hour for TTL.
Create or add new CNAME Record. Enter www for the host field, @ for Points to field, and 1 Hour for TTL. (Note: for CNAME host field, you can choose www alternatives like blog, web, etc. Take note that if you choose www, opening yourdomain.com in your browser will direct you to www.yourdomain.com, blog for blog.yourdomain.com and so on.).
Visit your Tumblr Dashboard, select Settings, then choose the blog that you would like to update.
Tick Use a custom Domain button
Click Test Your Domain. It should say “This domain is point to Tumblr”. If not then wait for up to 48 hours for your DNS updates to take effect.
Click Save.
II. Using a subdomain (Second Level)
Follow this step if you already have an existing host for your domain but would like to use a subdomain for your Tumblr blog.
Open your DNS Manager.
Create or add new CNAME Record. Enter yoursubdomainchoice for the host field, domains.tumblr.com for Points to field, and 1 Hour for TTL. (Note if your chosen subdomain is blog, then your new blog URL is blog.yourdomain.com).
Visit your Tumblr Dashboard, select Settings, then choose the blog that you would like to update.
Click Test Your Domain. It should say “This domain is point to Tumblr”. If not then wait for up to 48 hours for your DNS updates to take effect.
Click Save.
You are now good to go.
I you would like to use Gmail with your domain, which means that instead of using youraddress@gmail.com, you will have youraddress@yourdomain.com, follow the instructions here.
